Unlocking Grate Guy’s Casino in Super Mario RPG Remake

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is brimming with hidden content, and one of the most intriguing secrets is Grate Guy’s Casino — a tucked-away location full of quirky mini-games and valuable prizes.
With the Nintendo Switch remake, the casino makes its return, offering players a chance to test their luck and pick up rare rewards, including one of the most useful items in the entire game. Here’s how to find it, unlock it, and make the most of what’s inside.
Where to Find Grate Guy’s Casino
Grate Guy’s Casino is located in Bean Valley, but accessing it isn’t as simple as stumbling upon it. You’ll first want to visit the Nimbus Land Inn and speak to the snoozing Toad, who drops a subtle clue about its whereabouts. But for a more direct approach, head to Bean Valley and look for the six Warp Pipes being tended to by a Shy Guy.
Focus on the top-right pipe — defeat the Piranha Plant guarding it, then head inside. This is the path that leads to the casino, but entry is only possible if you’re carrying a specific key item: the Bright Card.
How to Get the Bright Card
To get your hands on the Bright Card, you’ll need to return to Booster Tower. Climb through the tower until you reach the U-shaped staircase room, where Knife Guy can be found juggling.
Speak to Knife Guy and he’ll challenge you to a guessing game. Your goal is to track the yellow ball he’s juggling and correctly guess which hand it ends up in. To earn the Bright Card, you must win 12 times in a row. The game speeds up gradually, so it’ll take sharp eyes and quick thinking.
Once you’ve nailed all 12 guesses, Knife Guy will hand over the Bright Card — your ticket into Grate Guy’s Casino.
What’s Inside the Casino
With the Bright Card in your inventory, return to the previously mentioned Warp Pipe in Bean Valley and head through. You’ll now have access to the casino and its mini-games. Here’s what you can play — and win.
Prize Blocks (Switch) / Slot Machine (SNES)
These are essentially the same game with different names depending on your version.
-
Jump and hit the block three times to spin the symbols.
-
Match three symbols for a Frog Coin.
-
The SNES version charges 10 coins per play; the Switch version lets you play for free.
Memory Game (Switch) / Blackjack (SNES)
The table on the right features a different game depending on your platform.
-
On SNES, you’ll play blackjack — try to hit 21 without going over to earn a Frog Coin.
-
On Switch, it’s a memory game involving matching character cards as requested by Toad. Match three and you’ll win a Frog Coin.
Look the Other Way
This classic game is the same across both versions. Speak to Grate Guy to start.
-
You’ll need to look in the opposite direction of where he points.
-
It’s entirely based on luck, with rewards ranging from rotten mushrooms to the occasional useful item.
The main reason to keep playing this game is the potential to win the Star Egg — one of the game’s most valuable combat items.
Should You Bother With the Casino?
While much of what the casino offers is based on luck, players who enjoy mini-games and hunting for rare loot will find Grate Guy’s Casino well worth the visit. The chance to earn the Star Egg alone makes the effort worthwhile, especially if you’re aiming to 100% the game.
